September 2017 Students and Staff of the Month Honored at Buffalo Grove

An outstanding student has been selected from each academic division at Buffalo Grove High School to be honored as the September Student of the Month.

Senior Cassandra Petersen was nominated as the Career Technology Education Department's honoree by CTE teacher Corinne Ginder, who commented, "Cassie currently works in the Little Bison Daycare.  Cassie is loving, kind and truly shows how much she cares for the Little Bison Students.  Cassie is a great example for her peers as well.  Her classmates look to her for advice and information regarding their teaching lessons and situations with the Little Bison.  She shows great passion for teaching, and is extremely diligent.  I can always count on Cassie to go the extra mile and lend a helping hand without even having to ask.  She will be greatly missed, and we wish her the best of luck pursuing an education degree next year.”

The World Languages/Social Sciences/English Language Learners division has chosen sophomore Mauricio Ruiz.  Nominating teacher Mike DiMatteo says, “I would like to nominate Mauricio Ruiz from my second hour World History class. Mauricio comes to class prepared and ready to go each day, and has a great attitude to boot. He always gives a consistently fine effort, and has shown a solid aptitude for World History to this point. Simply put, he’s doing a great job.”

Senior Samantha Goodmanson is Student of the Month for English/Fine Arts.  Band Director Henry Kappler nominated her for the honor with the comment, "Samantha is a drum major with the marching band and a member of the choral program. She is an excellent leader, always has a great and positive attitude about everything, accepts feedback willingly and has grown immensely over the course of my time at BGHS.”

The Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education department selected senior Brian Angeliu to be recognized this month.  Physical education teacher Tim Roe said, "Brian is a Physical Education student that takes pride in his efforts in gym class on a daily basis. Brian does well on his fitness tests, and has increased from year to year while his fitness levels rise. He is a daily active participant in all class activities and provides a quiet form of leadership to his fellow students. I am confident Brian will take on an active lifestyle when he graduates from BGHS.”

Sophomore William Matt is the Math/Science honoree.  He was nominated by science teacher Stephanie Ronge with the statement, "Billy is in Chemistry and is such a great leader in class. He constantly participates in class discussion and encourages other students to be their best by setting a great example. He is attentive and polite to his peers, helping others when they do not understand something or helping other lab members during the first lab of the year. His curiosity for science and good attitude in class sets a great example for success.”

Student Services has named freshman Gabriella Miljkovic as Student of the Month.  Gabriella was nominated by staff members Kathy Schneider and Jeff Siegal with the comments, “Gabby comes in each day with a smile on her face.  She is an enthusiastic student who is very pro-active and often asks for homework help.  Gabby is very friendly and gets along well with everyone in the room. She is a great asset to our group!”

Finally, the September Staff Member of the month is Michelle Price.  Ms. Price serves as one of BGHS’ Art teachers, as well as the Arts Unlimited Coordinator, and Free Flow sponsor.  Her nominating peers say, “Michelle Price is nominated for her ongoing commitment to her students of photography (often giving up her lunch hour and staying after school); her commitment to her art and the way she teaches us all how to see the world around us more clearly; for her ongoing dedication to Arts Unlimited and the new art gallery as places for celebrating all of the arts; and for her commitment to her Free Flow group -- giving these students a space and the attention to develop their art and a special camaraderie.  This year the group has blossomed due to her taking the extra steps to bring in other artists to help nurture our kids.‚Äč”
