Students from Buffalo Grove High School’s Career and Technical Education Department’s (CTE) Fashion Design and Little Bison Day Care programs are getting ready for their second annual fashion show on October 25th at 11:05am and 11:55am in the Buffalo Grove High School Theater. After last year’s inaugural fashion show success that featured pajamas, this year is guaranteed to continue the tradition of adorable collaboration. This special event is not open to the public.
BGHS CTE’s student-led fashion show will feature children from the Little Bison Day Care program, each paired with a student from the Fashion Design class. The day care program, taught by Kirsten Sendelbach, Kate Cahill and Betsy Goldenberg, is supported by students in the Early Childhood Practicum classes instructed by CTE teacher Corinne Ginder. Betsy Goldenberg says, “Having a preschool located in a high school setting has many perks and this event is one of them. This is a collaboration between Graphic Arts (who creates the invitation and the flier for the halls), and Fashion Design (who creates the costumes), and the Little Bison (who model the outfits on stage). It gives the children exposure to participation in a fun show. The high school students and the children bond and seem to enjoy the work and practice that go into such a show.”
Ronna Pflanz, Fashion Design teacher at Buffalo Grove High School, stated, “This collaboration gives my fashion students the ability to experience making and actually having someone wear ‘their’ clothes. Usually all garments are for personal use, this allows them a career-like opportunity. This is an excellent opportunity for the fashion career pathway. My favorite part of the collaboration is the fashion students putting in so much care, and excitement into making something for the Little Bison.” Featured costumes will include wizards, princess, cowboy and girl, indian boy and princess, karate girl and boy, jester, clown, doctor, and a kitty cat.
Approximately 75% of the students in the Fashion Design course will continue with the Fashion Career Pathway available to them at Buffalo Grove High School. For some students, this is their first introduction to flat-pattern making, alterations and garment construction, as well as textiles and fashion merchandising. All costumes are designed and made by students, several of which even travel to BGHS from other schools where the fashion course is not offered. Student designers include: Haya Bahjat (WHS), Marisol Castellanos (FVEC), Denisse Garces, Yesenia Garcia (WHS), Leah Gomberg, Minjeong Kim, Grace Mason, Alicia Meneses, Riley O'Brien, Anna Prigorskaya, Lizeht Sanchez (EGHS), Alexandria Saunders, Evan Sewell, and Odina Uktamova. Tanya Khazin, a junior in the Graphic Arts class, designed the flyer and invitation to the event.
